CHAPTER THIRTEEN
âYOU WILL NOTICE if you spend much time around my mother that there are days when you have missing blocks of time.â He pointed at the Mercantile. âYouâll be able to remember walking into the Mercantile, and then youâll be seated in a porch swing with pie in your hand and you wonât be able to remember the how, when or why.â
Sarah grinned. Of all the paths sheâd expected her day to take, not a one had ended up with Wes and pie after her first embroidery purchase and an impromptu lesson, so she could see his point. âI can live with that as long as I end up with pie.â
His smile was sweet as he nodded. When they reached the swing, they both eased down to keep it steady. Then they both sighed at the cool breeze that floated across the porch.
âWe are happy with our condition, arenât we?â Wes asked. He tapped one boot on the porch to set the swing in motion.
âWhat do we have to complain about?â Sarah answered. They ate their desserts in comfortable silence. It was easy to sit there next to him as the sun sank behind the mountains.
âBusy day?â he asked.
Sarah stretched her arms to release the tension in her shoulder. âYeah, I drove down to Idaho Springs to talk to a real estate agent. She specializes in mountain properties and vacation homes. I asked her to come see the lodge so we can talk about options.â
He nodded. âGood.â
âAnd I have a meeting set up with Platinum Partners in Denver. I hate that itâs in Denver because Iâd like to have you with me.â Sarah had hesitated before agreeing to meet Henry Milbank there. If she had to describe her first impression of the property developer after a single phone call, one word came to mind: slick. Oily? Slippery? Something about his tone and oozing charm had her picturing a weasel.
On the verge of requiring Henry Milbank to come to Prospect so that Wes could back her, Sarah realized that she was placing too much value on her property manager/lawyer/prospective buyer/closest neighbor/hot cowboyâs opinion.
Wesâs advice could not take precedence over Jordan and Brooke who were actual owners, and sheâd told herself to get over it and agreed to the appointment. Jordan would go with her and they would have plenty of time to evaluate any offer because they needed Brooke on board. She could do this without Wes.
âI can review any paperwork you get, take my neighbor hat off and put my lawyer hat on,â Wes said easily.
âYou are good at both so far. Iâm glad.â
He stretched a long leg out and gave the swing another gentle push.
âI would like to ask one favor from you.â Wes yanked his cowboy hat off and ran a hand through his hair.
Sarah nodded. âOf course.â
He whistled. âGood thing I still have my lawyer hat on, because itâs my duty to warn you about agreeing to things before you know the terms.â
âI thought that was a cowboy hat, but good point.
